yeah im okay. thanks for asking. yeah it’s just that I’m part of a fandom that’s obsessed with the same character that I’m obsessed with. except every time they write about him they want to take away his autonomy.
so idk who they think they’re writing about because apparently This Guy has to have some other force controlling him when he makes bad decisions. you know. Just so that he can be perfect and completely blameless and a victim.

Close as Strangers: pt 2
part 1
pairing: Katsuki Bakugou x reader
warnings: swearing, breakup, suggestive content
genre: angst with a happy ending
a/n: hi hi! i cant believe so many of you wanted a part 2 so here it is! you all seem to like how i write for bakugou which means a lot💕!! i once again hurt my own feelings a little bit with this one but it has a better ending than part 1 hehe. enjoy xx
Silence is the absence of noise. Sadness is the absence of joy. Fear is the absence of courage. Just because you are quiet at one point, doesn’t mean you will stay quiet forever. Just because you are sad at one point, doesn’t mean you’ll never be happy again. Things can go missing for short periods of time or even long ones but one thing is for sure; they always come back eventually.
You were the absence of Katsuki Bakugou. He was gone. No longer in your vicinity. Every time you saw him, he felt more like a ghost than a person. Lurking around, observing you. You supposed that’s what always happens when you break up with someone. They become a memory that you wish to kept stored and never remember. Just looking at their face can give you a pit in the bottom of your stomach. Breaking up with someone is a weird concept. The person you love most can become the person you never want to see again over night. Especially when things end the way they did between you and Bakugou.
His silence was deafening. It seemed that his silence said more than his shouting or screams ever did. His promises were just as empty. He promise to do better. He promised to make things better. However, he didn’t. You always took Bakugou as a man who stuck to his words. Maybe he stuck to his word more when it didn’t come to you.
You thought that distracting yourself with others would help. You spent a lot of time with Deku. He was a good guy after all and he gave you a lot of attention, which was something you had been missing. The two of you weren’t together though, no matter how badly Izuku wanted otherwise.
~
“Y/N!”
You looked over your shoulder to see Deku rushing towards you with one of his dashing smiles.
“Oh hi...”
He took a seat next to you on the common area couch, putting his arm around you.
“How are you? I didn’t see you much today,” he said. You shrugged.
“I’m alright, just been busy I guess.”
“Oh okay. Well we can hang in my room if you’d like?” suggested Deku. As tempting as sitting in a room filled with All Might posters sounded, you wanted to be alone.
“I actually don’t feel that great so I think I’m just gonna go to sleep,” you explained. You got up from the couch.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
You laid flat on your bed, staring at your ceiling. One part of you was telling you to just go to Izuku’s room, the other was telling you to go to Bakugou’s. Both seemed like the wrong answer.
You turned to your side. On top of your desk was a picture frame. The picture was backwards. You flipped the picture frame over and began to open it up.
It was a picture of you and Bakugou. You had fallen asleep on him in his room and he was out cold as well. He had left the door open, prompting his friends to enter his room and observe this softer side of Bakugou. They had snapped a picture, which was the one you couldn’t bring yourself to throw away.
You felt guilty for feeling these feelings. You shouldn’t miss him. Yet here you were, missing the boy who broke your heart beyond repair. What held you back from dating Izuku was that he wasn’t Bakugou.
You set the picture frame down and slipped on a jacket and some shoes. Quietly, you left your room and allowed your feet to take you where they pleased. That inevitably led you to his door.
Your fist hovered maybe a millimeter away from his door. You were so close to knocking, unsure if you wanted him to answer or not. You took a deep breath before placing two small taps on his door.
He was probably asleep. He would probably get mad if you woke him up. You knew you should leave. What happens if he answers? What happens then?
“H-Hi...”
Bakugou’s eyes widened when he recognized that it was you at his doorstep. You were shaking, unsure if it was from nerves or the cold air the swarmed the dorms.
“I’m sorry for bothering you...I-l’ll leave-” you ran from his door so quickly. Your feet led you outside the dorms and to the training ground.
There was a sense of comfort at the training ground. That was probably why you would always come here whenever you were upset. It was like reminiscing in what used to be, and how much you missed it.
“You’re predictable.”
You looked up at Bakugou, who stood in front of you, his hands in his pockets.
“Why’d you follow me?”
“Hey you ran from me. No shit I’d be curious as to why.”
Bakugou held his hand out to you.
“Come on, let’s talk inside.”
~
You sat on Bakugou’s bed. From the months you had been apart, his room hadn’t changed a bit. His desk had a picture frame on it, however it was turned around.
Bakugou took a seat at the edge of his bed, while your back was pressed against his bed frame.
“You wanted to talk. So talk,” you said plainly. Bakugou huffed.
“Why’d you knock on my door?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? Bullshit Y/N.”
“I can’t give you a good answer,” you whispered.
“You don’t get to decide if the answer is good or not. I do, so just spit it out.”
You shook your head.
“God that damn nerd must have a hell of a lot of patience dealing with you...”
“Fuck you.”
“So that’s why you came to my door? Fair enough,” he chuckled. You clenched your fists.
“Deku and I aren’t together,” you shot back. This got a reaction out of him. Bakugou moved closer to you.
“Good, because that nerd doesn’t know you the way I do.”
“You don’t know me at all, since half of the time when we were together you would ignore me.”
Bakugou moved closer again.
“So you’re just gonna scold me for everything I did wrong when we were together?”
“That would take too long.”
“Then why are you here?”
You leaned in to be closer to Bakugou’s face. You looked him dead in the eyes.
“I’m clingy, remember?”
“Hey I apologized for that-”
“You could apologize a million times more but that doesn’t fix anything. It doesn’t fix us or what we could’ve been or what we were. You and your apologies are meaningless to me,” you said.
“Meaningless? Really?”
“Really.”
“Well if I’m so meaningless, then why haven’t you left yet? Why are you sitting so pretty on my bed? Legs crossed, eyes wide. I’m not so sure Y/N, something is telling me there’s more to this,” smirked Bakugou. Your stomach clenched.
“Just answer me this.” Bakugou moved to have you pressed against the bed frame again, his hand on the frame next to your head. You gulped.
“Me or him?”
“That’s not-”
“Answer me.”
Bakugou’s breath was hot on your face. You both knew the answer, only you knew it was the wrong one. This interaction with Bakugou was probably more than you two ever spoke in your last week of dating.
“What happens after I answer? Nothing changes,” you said.
“If nothing is gonna change, why are you so hesitant?”
You sighed.
“I want things to change. I want you to change.”
“I’ll change-”
“No you won’t. You say you will but we both know you won’t. The second I leave this room, you and I will be as close as strangers, just as we always were. I gave you second chances but I can’t give you anymore. I can’t give myself that false hope that you’ll do better, because you won’t,” you cried.
Bakugou sat back. His demeanor changed from confident to melancholy.
“I hate seeing you with him. I hate it!”
“Katsuki-“
“You picked him to hurt me, didn’t you? You’re not suppose to be with him. You’re supposed to be with me-”
For once, you wanted silence. The only way you could think to get that desired silence was to shut Bakugou up.
The only way you thought to do that was to kiss him.
Shut him up with the lips he used to beg to kiss. With the clashing of teeth and tongue you both so desperately craved. Your hands held Bakugou’s cheeks as you kissed him. He pulled you towards him. His hands gripped tightly onto your waist as you sat on his lap. Your hands now tangled in his hair. His hands exploring every inch of you that he had missed so much. Oh how he kissed you. Certainly he was doing that better at least.
You and Bakugou had to gasp for air.
“Please Y/N... don’t pick him...”
You looked at Bakugou. He had puppy dog eyes. His lips began to quiver and he quickly buried his face into your chest.
“I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry...”
He continued to mutter these apologies to you. He cried so softly into your chest. You shushed him, rubbing his back to calm him down, kissing the top of his head. He tightened his grip around your waist, holding onto your t-shirt.
“It’s okay baby, it’s okay...”
Bakugou hugged you so tightly. He wasn’t gonna let you slip away again.
“Bakugou look at me,” you ordered. His red eyes looked into yours. You gently wiped away his stray tears.
“I don’t know what you want me to do. Of course I want you. I never stopped wanting you. But I want the version of you that I fell in love with, not the one that broke my heart. And that’s the problem. I don’t know which one I’m going to get.”
Bakugou shook his head.
“Please don’t leave, please don’t leave me. Everyone always leaves so I try to leave first but I won’t this time. I won’t mess up. I can’t bare to see you with anyone else but me...”
“I don’t like it either. I’m trying to move on but it’s really hard...”
“Please I’ll do anything to have you back...absolutely anything...”
“I just need you to do better... and not just promise to do it, I need actions Katsuki...”
“Yes, yes, I’ll do it. I swear. Y/N please...I love you.”
Your eyes widened, then began to shed its own tears. You hugged Bakugou again.
“I love you Bakugou.”
You showered the blond boy with endless kisses, unsure what else to do. You really did love him. That fact never changed.
“I promise.”
“Okay.”
~
The next day, Katsuki Bakugou did better.

To get back what you’ve lost, even if its by force/Lets bring hell to their damn doorstep boys.
a little dark side au story not directly being a sequel to my other angst story for this au~
This is Roceit with some hints at previous Demus and Princexiety and some soft hints at platonic Loceit, and it also includes a few of my own headcanoned dark sides( that im going to try to make more content for!)
Things had been...ok for the light sides once Deciet got full settled into his new role. ‘ Self preservation’ Logan had referred to him with a calm understanding and a welcoming title. And though some things hurt for Deceit to leave behind, he began to embrace this new style of living slowly but surely with the others, especially one certain musical prince whose smile made him admittedly swoon.
Yes Deceit would admit to himself that Roman Sanders had captured his affections, though sometimes he almost couldnt let himself believe it. Just as he almost couldnt believe the new golden and purple room he woke up in each day or the new clothes Patton and Roman had excitedly provided him.
“ It’ll look great on you Dee! I designed them myself!”
“ Its definitely a very stylin new look kiddo! And besides, you deserve some welcoming presents!” He had offered a small smile and taken the clothes with a nod, slipping back into his new room to continue settling it and redecorating it to his preference.
Though during the next video he hesitantly appeared, relaxing when he was greeted warmly by everyone. Roman had excitedly showed off his new updated outfit and Deceit took a deep breath.
“ I well...I also had a small idea to ‘change things up’ but, you guys wouldnt like it...” His tongue flickered out briefly.
“ Aw cmon Dee dont say that! You know no matter what it is we’ll like it!”
“ But, if it makes you more comfortable, we will not push you to share.” He looked at Thomas who smiled encouragingly and let down another wall, revealing the outfit he’d put together to officially start his new life here.
After that they had gotten closer, much closer as time went on. Deceit could almost, almost forget what and who he had left in the shadowy halls he once called home. But not completely, never completely...
He jumped when Roman placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, making him look up into loving crimson eyes. The taller side leaned down and kisses his scaled cheek as he invited Deceit to join him and the others into the living room for a movie marathon, and as their hands interlocked he couldnt have been happier...
“ aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!”
Elsewhere there was a thud and a clatter as a glass shattered against the dark wall. The one whose head it broke mere inches from didnt flinch, even as one of the shards left a bloody cut in his cheek, bright pink eyes bored.
“ Virgil if you keep breaking silverware we wont have any left.” He spoke in a  annoyed, uncaring voice as he wiped the blood from his skin. Virgil snarled at him in response, his eyes glowing purple and green and glowing strings tightly scattered all over the room like an intricate spiderweb. They all pulsed with a livid light, and illuminated the living room in a eerie purple cast. The others in the room had decidedly kept quiet for the time being, none of them willing to approach their furious leader having a meltdown. Though one scoffed and rolled his bright orange eyes sneering.
“ Could you throw any worse of a fucking tantrum Virgy?” Angry eyes narrowed in on him so fast with a disturbing head snap that he stiffened, feeling more strings lace around him.
“ What. did. you. say. Wrath.” The words were low and hissed, balancing into demonic sounding and he smartly shut up, backing down with a muttered “ Nothing Anxiety....Nothing at all....” Virgil growled and went back to his seethed pacing, his hood making it so only his glowing eyes were visible above his mouth. Neither Wrath nor Arrogance dared move closer, watching him pace in the middle of his web. Remus was nowhere in sight, having locked himself in his room for the past few weeks now to brood. Arrogance sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose irritated. Remus and him had been moody and snappish ever since Deceit had chosen the light sides, chosen Roman and the others over them weeks ago. And Arrogance, Aaron for short, was getting rather pissy himself about needing to walking on fucking eggshells every time he left his room. Wrath was getting angry too, no surprise there, but this was utter bullshit to him. And to Wrath, there was a simple solution.
At least he considered it simple as his gaze drifted to the dolls tangled in the air in strings. His eyes snagged on the light blue coded Patton doll before he looked towards the other ones, like Logan’s and Roman’s trapped toys. Now however there was another in the center of his lines, a peculiar doll with a carefully, intricately designed scaled side of his face and a small velvet cape wrapped in purple.
Finally he couldnt take it anymore and stood up from his seat, ignoring the way he himself began to get tangled.
“ Oh for fucks sake Virgil youre getting on my nerves with this! If youre so pissy that he’s over there then just fucking bring him back already and quit your damn hissy fit!” There was silence as the two stared each other down.
“ Just...take him back huh?”
All eyes turned towards the doorway where Remus stood, twitchy and eyes glowing. Admittedly it made Jacob nervous, Remus sounded calm and collected...something that didnt bode well with his twitching demeanor and intense stare.
“ Can we just do that...bring Dee back home?” Virgil looked down and began pacing again, though his posture was no longer hunched and aggressive. Instead now it was straight backed and more composed. He let out a hum and they all watched him quietly as he went around, his hand reaching out and grasping the Roman doll and holding it in his grip, in an almost caring and tender way. Memories fluttered across his mind and disappeared once more, filled with visions of the new couple’s happiness...
Take him back...
“ Yes...why didnt I think of that sooner? Oh Wrath...no, Des youre brilliant when youre not mindlessly aggravated...” A twisted smile curled upon Anxiety’s lips as he gazed at the doll then looked at Deceit’s, reaching his other hand out to graze his fingers along the yellow coded doll’s cheek.
“ I know exactly what will tempt them onward...and then I will bring him back...no, we’ll bring him back.” He looked over his shoulder at Remus, locking eyes with him as a wide crazed grin grew on Remus’s face, his pupils seeming to dilate dangerously. “ Wont we Remus?”
“ Oh fuck yes I cant wait!!!” He tightened his grip on the doll in his hand and looked down at it with a betrayed, angry sneer.
“ Lets bring some chaos and hell to their little doors shall we boys?”
Deceit shuddered as he got a sudden chill, making him glance around his room as he sat up. Something felt wrong to him, something he couldnt place. But nothing was wrong. The dark sides had been quiet for a few weeks now, and Thomas had only had small controlled bouts of anxiety that was easy to soothe and he had been happy and even a little more carefree than normal. Things were fine between himself and the other sides, great even when it came to his relationship with Roman. Roman...
Deceit couldn’t help the soft, dopey smile that crossed his face at the thought of the creative side. He had been nothing but kinda and affectionate since they began dating, and every day he saw him was another day Deceit felt he was on cloud 9. But he shook his head and refocused on the problem at hand, pulling on his beanie and jacket as he stepped out of his room. Nothing seemed off or even out of place.
“ Maybe...I’m just imaging things...” He shook his head again and pulled his jacket closer to him to warm up. He decided to head for the living room, that maybe being around the others would get rid of this feeling. So he made his way, furrowing his brows at how...dim the lights seemed now. Had he been in his room longer than he thought? ‘ No...no I couldnt have been...Patton would have called me down for dinner and he hasnt yet...’ His pace quickened as he spotted the stairs and the light glowing from the bottom of them. Deceit’s body relaxed a little at the warm glow and a smile reappeared on his face.
And it quickly dropped into a worried frown as he went down the stairs and found himself back at the end of the hallway.
He stopped and looked around confused, his surroundings not clicking in his mind. He should’ve been in the living room now. But he gazed at the hallway dotted with their bedroom doors and the stairs at the very end, warm cheerful glow still coming from the bottom. So he simply walked the hallway and hurried down the stairs again...
...only to end up back at the start of the hallway, again.
“ What the hell...” He looked around again, this time with a pit of dread forming in his stomach. Something wasnt right.
Why couldnt he leave the damn hallway?
He tried taking a deep breath to collect his thoughts, a tip Logan had given him in the case he ever got too upset to focus. Once he was calmer he walked slower towards the stairs. Not many sides could do something like this, and it definitely wouldnt be some kind of pranks the others would pull on him...
“ Remus I swear to god if youre doing this please cut it out!” He called into the hallway, eyes searching for any hints of the wild side. Deceit knew he loved edgier pranks, and scaring him with a prank of a ever repeating hallway in isolation felt just up his alley of thinking. He couldnt help but let out an exasperated sigh, anger fading. He couldnt stay that mad at the Remus if he was pulling a cruel prank. Honestly any reestablished contact with the other wouldve been...nice.
Deceit missed his friend, and maybe this would be his chance to heal the wounds he mightve caused by leaving and rekindle the friendship. He chuckled to himself as he stopped at the stairs.
“ Jeez....I guess Pat’s soft side is rubbing off on my more than I thought...” With that he headed down the stairs and shook his head at the beginning of the hallway.
“ Cmon Rem! I know youre probably pissy at me...and you know what? I dont blame you.” He started walking again, looking around him with a pleading look. “ But please, just come out and lets try talking again ok? Like we used to? We can spread out in my room and hell, I’ll even give you the bed spot you always fight for. Just...lets cut out the game now ok?” He got nothing but silence as an answer, and he paused.
Silence was something that was not Remus’s style, prank or not. And now his guard was up faster than a gunshot.
“....Remus? Are you there?” He looked around again, getting more and more uneasy at the silence and started walking again.
“ Arrogance if this is your idea of a joke it isnt funny! Cut your shit.” No response and once again he was back where he started. Now he was getting angry, and even a little afraid.
It wasnt Remus, because Remus couldnt handle this kind of silence for this long even for a joke, especially when he was called out.
Arrogance wasnt one to pass up taunting his inability to escape, and on top of that he wasnt really one for pranks either. When Remus called him a stick in the mud...he wasnt exactly wrong.
And Wrath didn’t have the patience for this kind of thing.
His walk this time was slower and more cautious, this time when he glanced around his eyes darted to dark corners too. The pit in his stomach grew and worsened as he made it to the stairs again and looked down them. He could even see the damn landing, washed in light. He hurried down again and almost yelled in frustration as he ended up at the beginning again. It took everything in him not to freak out.
“ Patton!?” No answer.
“ Logan??! Can you hear me??” No response.
“ R-roman!!!!” Nothing.
No he was starting to panic, but he forced himself not to let it consume him. That feeling felt too familiar and he ran down the hallway.
“ Virgil if this is you’re doing stop it!! This isnt funny!!” Still no response and he repeated the loop a few more times. He opeed his bedroom door and saw it was just as he left it, but simply staying in there now almost felt...bad, like he’d been cornering himself. And trying the others doors did nothing, because either they were uncommonly locked or simply wouldnt budge. His breath hitched and hissed through his teeth faster as he run down again, this time tripping and hitting the carpeted floor with a dull thud.
“ owwwowowowowwww....” He pushed himself onto his knees, eyes squinting in pain and a little dazed. For a moment he thought he saw a tall figure blocking the stair’s light and he shot up to his feet, groaning in absolute frustration when no one was there. He took a few steps and stopped, looking down at the floor when his foot stepped on something. One the floor was Roman’s crimson sash, and with gentle hands he picked it up and held it tenderly. The soft scent that drifted off it relaxed him, and made him smile as he looked down at it, rubbing the fabric between his fingers. Looking at it he finally took another deep breath and tried thinking more clearly, his eyes shutting briefly.
But because his eyes were shut he didnt notice purple glowing strings drip from the corners and behind him, silently creeping closer and surrounding him. When he finally opened his eyes and noticed the glow his eyes went wide in fear and the sound of footsteps on the stairs made him whip around. Though he only had time to partially shout as strings wrapped around him firmly and entangled him to the point he could barely fight back, strings around his through silencing his voice. He looked up at the hooded figure gripping and manipulating the strings like a puppet player, a cruel evil smirk on his face as his eyes glowed.
“Well well now Deceit. You really shouldve know better...” The world began to darken and he felt Roman’s sash slip out of his fingers vaguely noticing his beanie fall off his head when he was moved closer to Virgil. Virgil’s eyes narrowed and his smirk widened as Deceit’s eyes began to fell shut, nothing but purple in his fading vision.
“ You really shouldn’t have tried to leave.”
There was nothing but silence upstairs as Patton, dusting off his polo in a small huff from dealing with Arrogance and Remus making a chaotic mess in the living room before leaving as suddenly as they appeared, walked to the stairs landing and looked up to the dark hallway.
“ Dee! Kiddo dinner is ready! Come on down we dont want to start without you!” His head tilted and his brows furrowed in concern when he got no answer, his voice drifting and echoing around the hallway.
“ Kiddo? Can you hear me up there? You ok?” He put his foot on the first step as his voice echoed again.
“ Deceit?”
And echoed right over the old red silk sash and dark grey beanie that lay in the middle of the carpet, not a person nor side in sight.
Tadaa! Thats the end(for now) I hope you guys like it!!

Screams ripped through your ears, an endless sound of weeping and wailing; cries pulled from people in the rooms next to yours caused by a type of unending, unyielding suffering that you were now all-to familiar with.
It was impossible to sleep, because the screams wouldn’t stop. The only form of rest was when they had poked and prodded one too many times, and your body was too exhausted to fight any longer. The last thing you would see were his eyes and his satisfied grin knowing that he had broken you for the day as the world slowly faded to black-
A hand on your arm caused your whole body to jump, pulling you from another nightmare as your eyes opened, wide and panicked.
Bucky was looking at you the same, and you caught a flash of concern before he returned to his default scowl. He was crouched over you.
“Is everything okay?” you asked, breathless from the sudden switch from one nightmare to the next.
His jaw clenched. “You were getting too loud,” he murmured, then stood up. “We should get going anyway. Sun’s comin’ up.”
You nodded, face heating from embarrassment, eyes flickering over to where Sarah and the boys were sleeping.
If Bucky hadn’t woken you up, your cries could have caught the attention of any nearby walkers. And then you’d all be fucked.
Yet another reason not to be part of a pack. More lives your recklessness could put in danger other than your own.
Bucky knelt down to gently nudge the others awake, and you saw him give AJ and Cass a small, genuine smile as their eyes opened.
It made your chest pang with jealousy, though you weren’t sure if you were jealous of the fact that you didn’t have someone to smile at you like that - like your existence was the only good thing in the world - or the fact that Bucky would probably never look at you like that.
You willed yourself to blame it on the former.
The group walked in a line, Bucky ahead navigating through the woods. AJ and Cass followed behind while you and Sarah took the tail end. Sarah told you that camp was about three hours away and you let out a low whistle.
“Do you guys always travel this far out?”
She sighed, shaking her head. “No way, especially not with the boys. It was supposed to be a routine run to one of the gas stations a few miles out that hasn’t been completely cleaned out. But then a hoard of walkers came out of nowhere. Bucky ran off in one direction to try to get them off our backs, and it worked, but not well enough. I told the boys to run and regrouped with Bucky so we could take out as many as we could while they escaped.” She took a deep, shuddering breath. “I prayed they would find their way back to camp, but instead they ran in the opposite direction, and from where we found you, it looks like they had found the trail to our old camp and were trying to get there. If Bucky hadn’t been able to track them-” her voice broke, and you placed a hand on her shoulder in comfort.
“Hey,” you said softly and she looked over at you, tears in her eyes. “You did what you had to do, and they’re okay because of that decision.”
She gave you a weak smile. “Maybe, but they’re here with me because of you. It’s rare for people to help strangers in need these days, even kids. So thank you, again. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop thanking you.” Sarah laid her hand over yours resting on her shoulder.
You felt your heart swell as you fought back a smile, still terrified of allowing yourself to open up to her, though she was clearly doing so with you. So you decided to steer the conversation. “You said they went to the old camp. What happened?”
Her smile dropped quickly, along with her hand and you took that as a cue to lower your own back to your side, the comforting moment done with.
“It was a cul de sac we managed to fortify. We have- had a few tech guys who are good at inventing super helpful shit. Our group lived there for years with almost no threat.”
You swallowed, having a strong idea where the story was going. “Walkers broke through, didn’t they?”
She shook her head slowly and you felt a pit form in your stomach. Her voice lowered her voice, eyes on the boys in front. “No, not them. The monsters who attacked were living, breathing assholes.”
“How did they get in?”
Her jaw clenched. “One of our guys turned out to be a rat and let them right through the front gate. Knew right where our blind spots were and we got ambushed in the middle of the night. Apparently they wanted access to some of our tech. We managed to escape but….we lost a lot of people. That was six months ago and most of us still haven’t recovered.”
You nodded, eyes suddenly locking with Bucky’s as he turned to check on the group. As soon as his gaze landed on you he scowled and turned back around.
“He didn’t always used to be like that,” Sarah remarked, a mixture of sadness and amusement in her voice. “Bucky used to be the fun goofy one, always smiling and cracking jokes.”
Your brows furrowed in confusion as you tried to imagine what the broody man looked like when he laughed. What it sounded like….
If you might ever be able to experience such a rare occurrence.
Sarah continued, cutting off your sudden daydreams about the man who seemed to loathe everything about you. “Something in him changed that day. He blames himself for many stupid reasons. Him and Ward were really close, and his betrayal was really hard on Buck. And I think he not only feels his own grief, but ours as well. You can see it in his eyes sometimes, how he wishes that he could take on all of our pain so that we wouldn’t hurt anymore.”
Pain sprung to your chest at the thought of turmoil residing inside him. You knew what it was like to desperately wish for the ones around you to no longer feel pain, the willingness to bear the burden so that others didn’t have to.
“That’s a lot for someone to put themselves through,” you murmured, and you caught Bucky’s head twitch to the side.
Sarah nodded. “I think that’s why he’s so cold and closed off now. He’s too afraid of opening his heart back up again in fear of going through something like this all over again. Now, he just exists in complete survival mode, only focusing on our wellbeing.”
“He seems to lighten up around the boys, though,” you remarked, remembering the way he smiled at them this morning.
She grinned. “Yeah, the kids are his only kryptonite. He’s known them all since they were born. Pretty sure they’re the only thing keeping the old Bucky alive.” She sighed. “I keep hoping that someday that guy will come back to us. I don’t know if he ever will fully, but I do hope to hear that laugh again. Shit was contagious.”
The corners of your mouth twitched.
“I hope you get to meet that Bucky someday,” she said, nudging your arm with her elbow. “He was quite a guy.”
He turned around again, locking eyes with yours once more and you found yourself giving him a small smile.
He didn’t scowl this time when he turned back around.
I hope I get to meet him someday, too.
Tumblr media
You had about 30 minutes left in your trek back to their camp when Bucky asked Sarah to switch places with him. Your eyes narrowed as he went to your side, stride slowly slightly to increase the distance between you and the boys.
“Can I help you, Beefcake?” you asked sweetly and his jaw clenched in annoyance.
“Listen, Sweetheart, I know Sarah and the boys trust you, but I’m still not convinced.” Your hand instinctively reached down for the hilt of one of your blades, suddenly nervous about where this conversation was going.
“Look, if you’re going to kill me instead of letting me into camp, just let me know and I’ll part ways now,” you said, fighting to keep your voice unwavering.
He shook his head. “I don’t want to kill you..” his gaze looked to you as your eyebrows shot up and he rolled his eyes. “I’m serious. I’ll only do so if I think you’re going to hurt one of my people. I heard Sarah telling you about what went down, so you have to know that I’m never going to let an opportunity happen like that again.”
Your brows lowered and you nodded. “I’m not going to hurt you. Any of you.”
“I’ve heard that before, from people I thought I knew. Turns out some folk are really good at lyin’. I’m not taking that risk again.”
“So…what does that mean for me?”
Bucky ran his hand over his cropped hair. “We can’t allow you to see the location of the camp without checking with the group. In a moment, Sarah’s going to take the boys to safety and bring some of our people back to us so that they can get a read on you. If they think you’re okay, then we’ll still probably blindfold you as we let you in.”
“And if I don’t pass whatever test this is?”
“Then we’ll send you on your way and if you ever step foot in our camp, I’ll take you out then.”
You tsked. “No pressure, I guess.”
Bucky huffed, and under any other circumstance you might have taken the sound as a small laugh.
Too bad Bucky didn’t do that anymore-
A loud, piercing shriek erupted from behind you, causing you and Bucky to jump into action, his machete and your handaxe drawn.
It was a familiar screech, one that haunted you in your nightmares and real life. One that came from the most terrifying creature to exist on this planet.
A runner.
“Fuck,” Bucky breathed, eyes scanning the area for the unseen attacker. He turned quickly to Sarah and yelled, “Go! Take the boys and get out of here!”
Sarah grabbed the panicked boys by the hands and sprinted deeper into the woods. You and Bucky slowed your pace, waiting for the zombie to appear.
Finally, in the distance, you saw it.
And fear instantly flooded through your body.
Not many people knew what the actual cause was for the creation of the undead. Was it an unknown virus? Something in the air from years and years of manmade chemicals infiltrating it?
You knew the truth. They were made, created by those who wanted nothing but complete and total power. An army of undead that fed off of human flesh.
The idea was to give humans two choices: join the people who started this mess in their fight for world domination alive, or undead.
Of course, the greedy grew greedier, and the regular walkers were no longer doing the job well enough for them.
Instead of trudging their way to their prey, slowly dragging their bodies, they found a way to enhance some of them. Make it so that they could run as fast as humans.
The first time you had an undead running after you full speed, a part of you was tempted to just let it take you then and there. Because you had no interest in living in a world where these creatures existed.
That fear, that desire to give up and let them take you out of this waking nightmare, never went away.
And you felt it now when the runner finally caught sight of you and Bucky, body moving in an unnatural way as it charged toward you.
Bucky breathed heavily next to you, his heart most likely racing as quickly as yours. “Okay,” he said, “Stay next to me. When I give the signal, we move. Got it?”
You nodded, too afraid to speak.
The runner was about 50 feet away, and you could hear its nauseating grunts and moans as it approached.
Your hand clenched the hilt of ax tighter.
“Steady,” Bucky murmured, as if trying to comfort you.
It worked…a little.
Twenty feet away. You could see that it was missing an eye.
“Steady…” Bucky’s voice was a bit more uneasy.
It let out another horrifying screech, arms reaching out to grab you and it was now ten feet away from you.
“NOW!” Bucky screamed, and the two of you jumped to opposite sides, the runner barreling through the space you both had just stood. It stopped short, pivoting toward you and you raised your ax ready to strike.
But Bucky was already at its back, cleaving it in two with his machete and the two halves of its body fell to the ground.
The two of you stood over it, panting from the rush that always came during these fights.
“Thanks, Beefcake,” you said, and you heard him groan.
“What the fuck do I have to do to get you to stop calling me that?”
The top half of the runner’s body shifted and moaned, and you sprang forward to chop its head off, and the monster went still.
You stood up straight, wiping the sweat off your brow. “Maybe finish the job next time, Beefcake.”
Bucky snorted, another sound that almost resembled a laugh.
“Alright, Sweetheart, let’s get moving before any more show up-”
His words were cut off by another set of shrieks.
Multiple.
Both your wide eyes locked on one another and Bucky nodded. “Run.”
No need to tell you twice.
The two of you darted in the direction that Sarah and the boys ran, staying at each other’s side the whole way.
Every once in a while you would look over your shoulder to see if the runners were catching up. The first few times, there was no sign of them.
Then, you caught them.
Five undead gaining on you.
One was hard enough to fight for two people. But five? There was no way you and Bucky could handle that.
“We gotta go,” you shouted, returning your focus to the path in front of you, watching out for roots or uneven ground.
He nodded, looking behind to see what you were up against. “Fuck,” he muttered. “We’re almost at the camp. Once we reach the Bog we should be-”
Suddenly, you were running at full speed and there was no longer another figure next to you. You slowed down and turned to find Bucky on the ground. He must have tripped on something.
Worse than that, though, you realized as his movements were slowed and you saw a trail of blood streaming down his forehead. He had hit his head on a log.
And now the runners were almost at him, ready to attack.
His eyes found yours, and he waved his arm at you. “GO!” he shouted. “Get to Sarah and the boys!”
You stood frozen for a moment, debating between safety or almost certain death.
Bucky slowly moved onto his knees, hand wiping away some of the blood from his new wound. His back was to the runner that was about to tackle him-
It stopped short as your handaxe landed between its eyes, falling to the ground.
Bucky turned to the fallen undead then back at you as you sprinted toward him, the metal baseball bat you kept strapped to the side of your bag now in your hands.
“You gonna sit there all day Beefcake or help me kill these things?” you yelled, taking a swing at the next approaching runner and crushing its skull with one hit.
He jumped up, machete taking down the third one. There were three more coming, far enough that you could make an escape.
“Follow me,” he grunted, running at full speed once more, you at his heels.
You didn’t dare look over your shoulder now, knowing well enough that they were gaining, focusing only on the path before you.
Too distracted by the back of Bucky’s denim jacket as he guided you down his invisible path, you completely missed the looming fog you were approaching.
It was like running into a wall, and suddenly you were completely blind, zipping past trees that you couldn’t see until it was inches away from you, almost running into a few of them but managing to pivot out of the way.
Gone was the denim fabric in front of you. You had lost sight of Bucky.
Slowing to panicked jog, you aimlessly made your way through the invisible forest, eyes desperately scanning for your guide.
“Bucky?” you whisper-yelled into the void, heart racing as you spun in a circle, completely losing your bearings.
Had this been his plan all along, to ditch you in this cloud bubble so that you couldn’t follow him to the camp? Did he really distrust you that much that he was going to leave you stranded with runners at your back?
Suddenly, you felt a hand grab yours and you almost screamed until your eyes found Bucky’s.
“This way,” was all he said before dragging you along with him, a new sense of adrenaline coursing through you as you squeezed his palm.
He effortlessly navigated the both of you through the forest, changing directions every so often as you pushed through the fog.
“What is this?” you whispered, not sure if the runners had caught up with you.
“We don’t know, some natural/unnatural barrier that’s been here for years.” Bucky seemed to think the coast was clear, his stride slowing as he let go of your hand. You caught his jaw flex for a second before he continued, “Stev- some of us found it a while back but were never able to get twenty feet in without getting totally lost. It wasn’t until the attack that we knew we needed to use it as an extra wall of protection.”
“How far does it go?”
“A little bit more, but then it starts to clear a bit as soon as we get to the Bog.”
“What the hell is the Bog?” you asked.
Amusement flashed through Bucky’s features for a millisecond. “You’ll see.”
You spent the next few minutes walking in silence, the crunching of twigs and leaves the only noise.
The farther you walked, the larger the trees got, you noticed. Not just taller, the trunks were massive, as if you could live in one and be totally comfortable.
Bucky reached into his pocket and grabbed a black piece of fabric. “Do you have anything like this? A kerchief or something?”
Your brows furrowed, and you reached inside your bag for a red bandana as Bucky pulled the black fabric over his head and around his neck, lifting a part of it to cover his nose.
“You’re gonna wanna do this in a second.”
Brows still furrowed, you tied the bandana around the lower half of your face.
That’s when you saw it.
A river, cutting through the woods and blocking the rest of your path. It was….green, and steam coming out of it.
You were grateful that Bucky told you to cover your nose, because even with the makeshift mask you could smell the rotten odor coming from it.
“What is this thing?” you asked, slowing your pace as you and Bucky continued to walk toward it.
“The Bog. This is something that Banner created. An extra wall, so to speak. Disintegrates anything that dares to touch it.”
You gulped. “How the hell do we get over it?”
Bucky’s eye twitched, looking at your surroundings and then to the other side of the Bog.
Then you remembered your conversation right before the attack.
“I’m not supposed to know yet, am I? I need to be vetted.”
He stared at you, unblinking, and you wished you could read his thoughts in this moment.
Then he shook his head. “The runners might still be out there. And I don’t know if Sarah got back or if she knew to get the others to meet us, which means I would have to leave you here and get them myself.”
You nodded.
“Plus,” he said, then paused. You could see his mouth opening and closing behind the fabric. “You could have left me back there, and you didn’t. I still don’t trust you, but after all the shit I’ve given you, for you to do that has to mean something.”
You found yourself speechless, unable to find the words to respond to this breakthrough between you and the man who had threatened to kill you countless times already.
“That doesn’t mean I won’t kill you though if you try to pull any shit on us.”
You were glad the bandana covered your mouth so he couldn’t see your smile. There it is.
“You’re welcome, Beefcake. You ole’ softy.” You nudged his shoulder and he grunted with distaste.
“Come on,” he said, walking toward the Bog. “This way.”
He led you over to one of the massive trees right next to the deadly water, hand pressing on a piece of the bark.
Said piece clicked as it pushed inward, and suddenly a piece of the trunk was moving.
It was a door.
He turned to your wide-eyed expression and you knew there was a smirk on his face even though you couldn’t actually see it. “Banner,” was all he said.
“Who the fuck is this guy?” you muttered.
“A real nerd,” Bucky responded.
“A real helpful nerd,” you said back and Bucky snorted again.
“Come on, Sweetheart. Let’s get moving,” he said, stepping into the trunk.
You saw a ladder inside, and Bucky started to climb it. Right when you were about to follow, something slammed into you against the tree.
It wasn’t a walker though.
“Hello, Y/n,” a gruff voice whispered into your ear and you tried to squirm out of the man’s hold. “We’ve been lookin for you.”
You used all of your strength to push back, but your attacker just slammed you back into the tree, much harder this time and you felt a crush as pain shot through your right shoulder and you cried out.
The man laughed. “Oh, how I missed hearing you scream-”
Suddenly, there was no more weight pressed against your body and you fell to the ground, writhing in pain, mind buzzing with the screams that haunted your nightmares.
When you looked up, Bucky had the guy tackled to the ground.
“Who are you?” he shouted. “Who sent you?”
Instead of responding, the man grabbed his blade and swiped it at Bucky, who wasn’t fast enough pulling away and got sliced in the side, and he fell back.
The attacker used the opportunity to return to you, lifting you up by the throat and you tried using your good arm to break free.
“Time to go home, hun. Boss misses ya-”
Something whirred past you and the man let out a small grunt, something protruding from his chest.
His hold loosened as he fell to the ground, unmoving.
You whipped your head across the Bog and saw three figures standing there. Two men, one of them holding a bow, and Sarah.
Bucky stood up, hand pressed to his side and he gasped in pain. You ran over to him.
“Are you okay?” you asked.
He glared at you, pulling the black fabric down. “Who the fuck was that?”
You shook your head. “I don’t-”
“Bullshit, Y/n,” he yelled, grabbing you by the collar and pulling your face to his. “You led this guy straight to our camp?”
Tears streamed down your face. “I didn’t, no, I promise. Bucky, please-” you let out a wet sob.
He didn’t seem to care about your distress. There was no remorse in his eyes, only anger.
“I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you-”
“Bucky, stop!” Sarah commanded, climbing down the ladder inside the trunk and running toward you. The two men followed behind. “We need to get rid of the body and get to camp before someone else shows up.”
Bucky stared at her incredulously. “But she-”
“She’s wounded, Buck,” Sarah cut off. “You both are. Just shut the fuck up and let us take her in.”
He shook his head. “We can’t-”
“That’s enough, Bucky,” one of the men said. “Sarah’s right. We gotta go. We’ll handle it inside.”
“But Sam-”
“Enough, Bucky.” Sam’s deep brown eyes locked onto yours and he nodded. “Can you climb?”
You bobbed your head up and down, tears still streaming down your face as the pain in your shoulder finally set in. It would be hard, but you could climb with one arm.
Bucky made it seem so easy, after all.
With one final nod, Sam looked to the man with the bow. “Clint, help me with the body. Sarah, take her and Bucky to Banner to get looked at. We’ll meet there to discuss everything.”
Sarah rested a hand on your good shoulder and gave you a sympathetic nod, then led you into the trunk. You followed her up the ladder, fighting back your whimpers of pain.
The climb was about 20 feet to the top, where you spotted an opening, and you looked through to find a wooden bridge within the branches.
You could tell by its placement that it would be almost impossible to make out from the ground below, which was why you had noticed it then. Following Sarah, you crossed the bridge to the other tree, climbing down the ladder within its trunk.
And then, you were on the other side.
“This way,” Sarah said, walking ahead. You steeled yourself before turning around to see Bucky, eyes like daggers glaring at you.
You turned back around quickly.
The farther you went, the more the fog dissipated, and suddenly you were walking into a clearing, a large brick wall with a metal fence surrounding a massive brick building in the center. AJ and Cass were right at the entrance, faces lighting up when they caught sight of you.
You felt a rush of wind as Bucky stormed past you, his hand pressed against the wound on his side, marching onto the grounds.
“Welcome to Shield,” Sarah murmured, leading you through the gate and into camp.
